ONGULA VILLAGE LODGE ACCOMMODATION NEAR ONDANGWA, NAMIBIA

Situated in the heart of Owamboland, a stone throw from Ondangwa north of Etosha National Park, you are invited to experience our local traditions! Built alongside a live homestead, 4 luxury Rondawels (African-style round huts) accommodates 8 guests offering exclusivity and the luxury of home, while participating in local chores, delighting in local culinary dishes and drinks and learning local arts and crafts. This is your introduction to our world and life-style!

Ongula Villa Homestead Lodge strategically situated between Ondangwa (one of the oldest towns in the northern region) and Eenhana, built alongside an active Owambo Homestead (or Village). The first lodge in Namibia to offer an introduction to the traditional lifestyle of our Owambo people.

Participate in the preparation and making of local traditional drinks and meals, discover the art of basket weaving and pottery and explore the beauty of our region. We welcome you to experience our world!

Ongula Village Homestead Lodge situated in the heart of Owambo North of world famous Etosha National Park offers you the perfect add-on to your classic Namibia journey. At Ongula we have 4 en-suite Rondavels offering traditional cuisine. We offer day tours to the Museum, open and craft markets and tribal houses or attend some of the seasonal block-buster events such as Marula Festivaland traditional weddings.

ACTIVITIES

Ongula Activties and Attractions
Participation in the traditional chores such as pounding mahangu; open fire cooking; cattle –herding; basket weaving and clay-pot making.You will have to opportunity to participate in pottery and baskets making activities. One of our experienced crafters will assist you to create a gift that you can take away with you. Learning about and participating in Owambo traditional chores around the homestead.

The Pottery Project
Together with basket-making, pottery has a long history in the north-central regions of Namibia, with the oshanas (depressions that fill up with water during the rainy season) providing not only fish but deposits of clay. Read more.

The Onankali Omahangu Paper Project
Mahangu or pearl millet is the staple food of the north-central regions. Able to grow in low-rainfall, high temperatures and low soil fertility, it is eaten in a vari- ety of dishes and drinks, and the stalks are used to feed cattle and thatch roofs. In 2002, yet another use for this versatile subsistence crop was found. Read more.

  • Nakambale Museum- a legacy of the Finnish Missionaries who brought Christianity to Namibia.
  • Onankali Mahangu “Pearl Millet” Paper project.
  • A visit to Oonte a bottle recycling project of 450 orphaned and vulnerable children in the Ondangwa area which is an ideal experience for Volunteer tourism.
  • Attend the communal court proceedings.
  • A tour to Ondangwa’s open craft market.
  • Village “expeditions”
  • Sundown at local “shebeen” (pub)


VOLUNTOURISM AND EDU-TOURS IN NAMIBIA

In the village, close to the lodge, we have schools with children who need an extensive help in English and Mathematics in order to be enrolled in universities across the globe. We also have a computer literacy program which is designed to teach local children and young adults relevant skills and trends in computers and technology. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to visit the Queen's Community Kindergarten and be there for the kids for company, lessons and donations. There are projects where volunteers will be coming to learn skills such as basket weaving, pottery making and the mahangu paper making projects. 

Our Voluntourism Programme is open to volunteers aged over 18 from any part of the world, and offersparticipation in programmes such as arts and design, education-based services, or youth and women empowerment.Campsite accommodation with communal bathroom facilities is provided for the volunteers in 4 bed yurts equipped with bedding, linen, and lockable safe boxes for important documents and personal belongings.
