Geography and History

Masunga is a village in the North East District of Botswana. The village is the Headquarters of the North East District. The nearest city to Masunga is Francistown, which is situated about 120 km from it.

The Chief of the region is Thabo Maruje Masunga who recently took over from his uncle Christopher Masunga. Like most villages in BotswanaMasunga has followed a long winding road. It has developed from a settlement of traditional mud and thatch huts to increasingly brick walls, metal and other roofing materials. A substantial number of families have a mix of traditional and modern structures on the same compound.

The language spoken in the North East Region is Kalanga, not Tswana like the rest of Botswana. Kalanga is closely related to Shona, the main language of Zimbabwe.

There is a sport stadium in Masunga where competitive sport is played.
